The Massachusetts Gaming Commission: Legal Wagering “Requires Some Time”
Following months of stalemate, the state legislature passed a measure permitting sports betting in the final moments of the legislative session last week. This came after the House and Senate each approved their own measures, which had substantial discrepancies.
Under the measure, any operator with a physical casino or racetrack in the state can obtain a permit, and there will also be 7 online-only permits. All of these permits cost $5 million.
The measure allows wagering on collegiate sports, but prohibits wagering on in-state teams. The tax rate for online wagering is 20%, and the tax rate for retail wagering is 15%.
