The Belgian government is on the verge of reducing its weekly loss cap to €200. The Belgian Cabinet has endorsed a proposed law that will decrease the nation’s weekly deposit cap from €500 (£427/$591) to €200. However, the limit will continue to be applied on a per-operator basis, not nationwide.

The proposal was put forth by the Justice Minister, Vincent Van Quickenborne. The Cabinet had initially considered maintaining the limit, which was implemented in April 2020, at €500. They had considered making it a “global” limit that applied to all operators, similar to the German system.

However, the Cabinet ultimately chose to retain the per-operator limit but lower it to just €200 to “bolster player protection.”

Furthermore, the proposed law will also authorize the Belgian Gaming Commission to consult with the National Bank of Belgium to determine if a player is responsible for their debt.

If the proposal receives approval from the National Data Protection Authority, it will be forwarded to the Council of State for a vote.

Van Quickenborne also submitted a second proposal, which was also approved. This will add gambling establishments to EPIS, Belgium’s national exclusion registry.

At this moment, this instrument prevents individuals who have voluntarily excluded themselves from gambling or have been placed on a restricted list from entering casinos and slot machine establishments. The government declared that the list is “undeniably a beneficial method to combat gambling addiction.”
